Mrs. Catherine Elder

After a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Catherine May (Hunter) Elder passed away peacefully at Riverview Gardens on Sunday July 2nd, 2017 in her 96th year.  Cherished daughter of the late Robert and Janet Hunter.  Catherine’s had two main loves, the first being her church.  She was a member of Victoria Ave United Church, teaching in the Sunday School and later serving on both the Official Board and the Trustees.  She was a member of Unit 6 of the UCW, catering events, holding rummage sales and the crowning event, baking tirelessly to make pies for the last International Plowing Match held in Chatham.  She was dedicated support of Scouting Canada, with four sons who participated in the events.  Her second love was her family.  As the youngest of eight children, she spent countless hours writing letters and keeping in touch with her brothers and sisters, as well as all her nieces and nephews.  She was a loving mother to four sons, Brian, Raymond (1988), Bruce and Gordon.  She was the loving grandmother of Robert (Stephanie), Philip (Linda) and Janet (Byron), and great grandmother of Sara and Alexander.  The smells of freshly baked cookies, strawberry jam, canned preserves greeted everyone who entered her home.  Each of the boys knew that their friends would always be welcomed, and there were countless visits.  As each of the boys ventured out on their own they left with the knowledge there would always be a hot meal and a warm bed at home if ever they needed.  She and her husband David (2015) were married in 1949 and they supported and encouraged each other throughout the years.  As the owner of Russell Brown Drug Store, Dave found great comfort from Catherine, who provided a safe haven at home where the rigors of the day could be left behind.  In later years Catherine became involved with the Ontario Genealogical Society where she connected with more family around the world, researching her family tree’s many generations.  Catherine was a founding member of the Tartan Sertoma Club of Chatham.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.  Our thanks to the staff at Riverview Gardens who cared for Mom in her final days.  Family and friends are invited to the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington West, Chatham, 519-352-2710 with visiting on Tuesday July 4th from 12 noon to 2 p.m.  The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Margaret Moriyama officiating.  Interment Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham.  Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider Alzheimer Society Chatham-Kent and Mental Health Network of Chatham-Kent.  On-line condolences may be left at www.alexanderfuneralhome.ca
