Mrs. Hazel Marlatt

MARLATT, Hazel Elizabeth (Hartley)

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear mother Hazel at the Chatham-Kent Hospice on Saturday August 12th, 2017 in her 92nd year.  She is predeceased by her husband Glenn (1986).  Hazel leaves behind her eight loving children, Evelyn Clymans (Alfons) of Kilworth, Michael Marlatt (Patricia) of Astorville, Edward Marlatt (Susan) of London, Barbara Marlatt (the late Stephen Buckingham) of Chatham, Daniel Marlatt of Chatham, Laurie Cranton (Bryan) of London, Tracy Gagnier (Denis) of Wallaceburg, and David Marlatt (Beverly) of Chatham.  Loving grandmother of fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.  She is survived by her sister Beatrice Simmons of London, and several nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by her parents Robert James Hartley and Inez (McCullough) Hartley, and brothers Myron and Roy.  Hazel was a well-known dressmaker for over thirty-five years designing and sewing many wedding gowns and sometimes the whole bridal party’s dresses; as well as many suits, dresses, skirts and pants for her large clientele.  In later years Hazel switched over to making quilt tops and hand quilting them.  The quilts were gifts to friends and family and are precious heirlooms.  You may have seen Hazel in her red Buick LeSabre with the license plate “SEWQLT” heading back and forth to her favourite fabric store.  Hazel will be sadly missed by her dear friend Russel Smith who has the same love of quilting and whom shared many laughs together.  She will also be missed by special friends Marion and George Prins and the Chatham Senior Centre, Thursday quilt ladies who have been finishing putting her quilt tops together and hand quilting them when she could no longer sit at the quilt frame.  Special thanks to Sis and John Barry for their love and care over these last years, and special thanks to Dr. Jason Denys, Linda (PSW-VON), all the angels at the Chatham-Kent Hospice and Lisa (VHA Nurse).   Family and friends are invited to the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington West, Chatham, 519-352-2710 with visiting on Wednesday August 16th from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday August 17th visiting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. David Steadman officiating.  Interment Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham.  Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation.  On-line condolences may be left at www.alexanderfuneralhome.ca
