Mrs. Evelyn Reeve

A life long resident of Chatham, Evelyn “Ev” “Evie” Reeve, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday June 25th, 2020 at the age of 87 years.  Cherished daughter of the late Melvin and Tena (Johnston) Deans. Beloved wife of 39 years to the late Robert Reeve (1989), and dear and special friend of Donald Howard of Chatham.  Loving mother of the late Ted and Tom Reeve (2004) and survived by her loving daughter-in-law Lynn Reeve of Chatham.  Proud grandmother of Rob Reeve and Chris Reeve, and step-grandmother of Carole of Utah.  Proud great grandmother (“Grama Bob”) of Owen, Evan, Hunter, and Regan.  Dear sister of the late Doug (1947) and the late Jenny Powers (2015).  She will be missed by her nieces and nephews, and especially by her niece Gail Vannieuwenhuyze, who was like a daughter to Ev.  Also missed by son #3 Jules Staal.  Ev will be forever remembered for her many volunteer hours spent in the community, and her strong and dedicated love for her family and friends.  Her sense of humor, honesty, warmth and always an open ear to listen, touched the lives of many.  She lived a very active life, loved to laugh, and have fun, and always gave of herself with no limits for family and friends.  She always possessed a natural gift of empathy and showed kindness to everyone she met, whether it was chatting with a stranger, someone on the phone, or to family and friends.  Her mission in life was to support the less fortunate, and to always be there for family and friends.  Ev had a wonderful career for over 42 years at Bell Canada, as an operator, supervisor and teacher, and always considered her Bell fellow employees extended family.  She was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and served as President for many years.  Ev also served as Telephone Employees District Chairperson which included Windsor, Sarnia, and Chatham for over ten years.  She received many awards over the years but was most proud of her Bell Canada Volunteer Award (2001).  Ev received the St. John Ambulance Association-Priority Vote of Thanks (1965) and a serving sister of the Order of St. John (1974).   She was the first female St. John Ambulance instructor in this area.  Ev received the Women of Excellence Award (2004), Tarton Sertoma Service to Man Kind Award (2006), and Order of St. John Commendation (2007).  Ev was a member of the Kent Reg IODE for over 50 years, Moose Lodge, the Canadian Legion, and long-time member of Victoria Ave United Church where she served on council for over 30 years.  In more recent years Ev became a member of the staff at the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, and a member of Sprucedale United Church where she would continue serving on the Pastoral Care Council.  Ev along with her late husband and Rev. John Neal started Telecare listening service and served on Telecare Teleministries of Canada. She was the Chatham-Kent Lifeline Manager for over 14 years.  Ev volunteered at the CKHA for 20 years, the Canadian Lung Association, and was the Volunteer Co-ordinator for Festival of Trees, Operation Cover Up, and Festival of Nations. Ev loved to travel and was fortunate enough to travel while working and later in retirement.  She always had a summer home, Mitchell’s Bay, Parry Sound, and later in Light House Cove where she enjoyed socializing and time spent on the water.  Ev truly had a wonderful long life and will be missed be all. At the Reeve house there was a tradition for what you could say when leaving-it was never “Goodbye” but rather Until we meet again!”  Friends wishing to pay their respects to Ev are invited to call the funeral home in advance to reserve a time on Tuesday June 30th from 1 to 9 pm.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, you must schedule your visitation time in advance.  All attendees as mandated by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario must wear a mask at all visitations and funerals.  The funeral service for Ev will be streamed lived from the funeral home on Wednesday July 1st, 2020 at 1 pm with Rev. Carol Ferguson of Sprucedale United Church officiating.  The link to the funeral service can be found on Ev’s notice on the funeral home website.  Arrangements entrusted to the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington West, Chatham, 519-352-2710.
