Mr. Abie Heersma

At St. Andrew’s Residence, Chatham, on Saturday July 25th, 2020, Mr. Abie Heersma of Chatham in his 87th year.  Cherished son of the late Albert and Janna Heersma.  Beloved husband of 60 ½ years, and best friend of Dorothy.  Loving father of Tim and Helen, and Tom and Shonna.   Proud grandfather of Megan and her fiancé Aaron, Taran, and Kinsey.  Predeceased by his premature daughter Cheryl Ann, and his sister Mona Heyboer.  Born in Eindhoven, Holland, Abie and his parents moved to Canada in 1948.  Abie excelled as a student and long-distance runner while growing up, eventually obtaining a teaching degree from the University of Western Ontario.  His first teaching position was at John N. Given Public School, then Queen Elizabeth II, but the majority of his career was as a History and Economics teacher at John McGregor Secondary School from which he retired in 1989. Following retirement, Abie and Dorothy took pleasure in having more leisure time to pursue their hobbies such as stamp collecting, playing cards and board games, attending the theater and listening to classical music.  They also enjoyed camping, traveling and spending time with their grandchildren.  An avid reader, Abie used his acquired knowledge every weeknight watching his favourite show “Jeopardy” and matching wits with those of the contestants. Abie and Dorothy were long-standing and very active members of St. Andrew’s United Church. Abie was considered a very kind and gentle soul who was extremely loved by his family and well-respected by his friends and colleagues.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Friends wishing to pay their respects to Abie are invited call the funeral home in advance to reserve a time on Tuesday July 28th, 2020 from 1 to 9 pm.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, you must schedule your visitation time in advance.  All attendees as mandated by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario must wear a mask at all visitations and funerals.  The funeral service for Abie will be streamed lived from the funeral home on Wednesday July 29th, 2020 at 11 am with Pastor Greg Simpson of St. Andrew’s United Church officiating.  The link to the funeral service can be found on Abie’s notice on the funeral home website.  Arrangements entrusted to the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington West, Chatham, 519-352-2710. Cremation to follow with interment Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham.  Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider St. Andrew’s United Church, Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation, and Kidney Foundation of Canada.  On-line condolences may be left at www.alexanderfuneralhome.ca
