Mr. Charles "Ross" Eberlee

Peacefully at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on Saturday, September 12, 2020, Charles Ross Eberlee of Chatham at the age of 94 years. Loving son of the late Charles and Fanny Jane (Huff) Eberlee. Dear husband of Lois Marie (Shaw) for 72 years. He will be missed by his son David and wife Amy of Simcoe. Predeceased by brothers Ernest, Harley, George and Louis and sisters Grace Roach, Georgina Ferguson, and Marie McCann. At age 17 Ross joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a telegrapher on a frigate in the north Atlantic and was at sea when word came of the war’s end in May 1945. He returned home and enrolled at the Chatham Business College where he met his future bride, Lois. Upon graduation Ross accepted a bookkeeping clerk’s position at Sunnen Products Company Ltd where he worked up the ranks, retiring as Treasurer of, now Guspro Inc., 43 years later. Ross had side businesses along the way with his brother-in-law Harold Roach farming, and his dear friend Gordon Pritchard in the Chatham Decorating Centre on King Street. After retirement from Guspro, Ross enjoyed his work as a field representative with the Federal Business Development Bank, visiting and assessing area businesses. Ross was a member of the Chatham Rotary Club for over 60 years, serving twice as President. He was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award as was Lois and together they hosted and championed many Rotary initiatives. Ross was a founding Director of the Chatham-Kent Community Foundation in 1990 and took great pride in the success of the Foundation’s achievements. Ross was born into the Chatham Baptist Church and remained an active member his lifetime until its close in 2013. Ross’s personal interests included books, travel, gardening, woodcarving and modern art. He was a great supporter of the Chatham Public Library and participated on the Friends of the Library volunteer committee. The Eberlees travelled extensively through Great Britain, Europe and North America. Over the years Ross enjoyed the Maple City Golf and Country Club and he and Lois remained social members in later years. Other social enjoyments came from his participation in the Dickens Society, the Community Arts Centre, the Capital Theatre initiative, and the Navy alumni. For the last five years Ross has enjoyed his home at St. Andrew’s Residence in Chatham. He was happy being with Lois and reacquainting with friends from along his life path during that time.  Friends wishing to pay their respects to Ross are invited to call the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington St. West, Chatham, (519-352-2710) in advance to reserve a time for the visitation and the funeral service on Friday September 18th, 2020 with visiting from 1 pm to 2:30 pm.  The funeral service for Ross will be conducted in the chapel of the funeral home at 2:30 pm with Pastor Bill Terris officiating.  The funeral service will be live streamed, and the link will be shared on the Ross’s notice on the funeral home website.  All attendees as mandated by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario must wear a mask at all visitations and funerals.
